warwick arts centre

Since 2024, I have been embedded at Warwick Arts Centre, working with Head of Music Chris Mapp and Creative Director Beth Byrne. My work has included serving as Composer in Residence, leading composition projects, workshopping material, directing rehearsals with students, and mentoring emerging composers. During this time, I also wrote Burning House for mezzo-soprano, jazz ensemble and the University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra, performed on 1 December 2024. It draws on Buddhist ideas and a darker, drum and bass influenced sound world, with a strong sense of groove running throughout.

I was then invited to continue as an Associate Artist, contributing more widely to the artistic programme. In this role, I support the development of the classical music programme, particularly the orchestral series, and contribute to concerts and events, including pre-concert talks. I also offer input on repertoire, soloists and programming, and act as a critical friend, drawing on my lived experience to help ensure the work remains accessible, welcoming and representative.

Part of this has involved conversations around audience development and community engagement in Coventry, alongside relationships with local groups and ongoing work with students on campus.

It has been both fun and a real privilege to have a voice within the artistic team, to be listened to, and to help shape the work in a meaningful way. I will be working with the University of Warwick to curate concerts in partnership with my students at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. I am especially excited about a developing legacy project focused on shining a light on composers in the region and creating more opportunities for their work to be heard.
