Respek Vanley: Music Workshops Session 1

The workshops took place today at St. James school Handsworth. It was great to have Prince Jamo‘s support, for him to impart his vast knowledge of reggae music.

The kids were really excited to skype chat Vanley Burke, and asked some amazing questions, such as why he gave his aunty his radio and not his camera, as a parting gift (as he was leaving Jamaica for the UK).

Here is some end of session feedback:

Next session we are going to start writing lyrics proper, the kids chose roots reggae riddims they wish to sing bespoke lyrics over.

‘Marcus Garvey’ – Burning Spear:

‘Hail Him’ -Burning Spear:

Handsworth Revolution – Steel Pulse:

The young people amazed me; the selection I put together included The Abyssinians, Yabby You, Niney, Dennis Bovell, Leroy Smart, but they chose TWO Burning Spear tracks – and one which is quite moody. Impressed. Should have seen the dance moves during the listening section, teachers came in the room bopping away. 🙂

You can check the young people’s performance at the mac July 7th, 3pm.
