I promised I would blog about my compositions – so here is one. The band and I had a jam around the basic chord progression; a work in progress. I recorded some audio at the rehearsal, please excuse the giggling:

It’s a rough, rough sketch of a song about a humanoid. It is meant to sound more folky, with a dash of swing – time, but we didn’t have any ukuleles that evening. I will update with its progression. Tuning is off in places – but I’ve uploaded it to show the process and progress…

I have written more about the session on the band’s blog.

It was a really good learning experience teaching the other band members the song. I also realised that as I joined the band quite late – I’ve always felt like I was playing catch up since everyone else knew the songs relatively well. Well, this time round with me knowing the overall sound I was set the task of putting my creations inside theirs. Harder than I thought it would be. For once the band (as opposed to me) were in a less comfortable position – and it was interesting watching them pick up the chords and rhythms; looks of concentration on their faces. (Evil laugh).

Initially I was quite shy giving directions and humming the riffs etc, but having such welcoming, open musicians to guinea pig new songs on was and is a joy! I got some really good feedback – I really loved having some slide bass guitar on the track, definitely want some jazz claza and ukulele on it.
